Destination Wedding Planning from a wedding photographers view.
Hello! As a wedding photographer I have been amazingly lucky and privileged to photograph a number of destinations weddings over the years. This may sound strange and expensive maybe even a little odd. I am sure when you have looked at the packages offered by various companies that include a photographer, but and it’s a big but……. Have you considered the cost of taking a UK photographer with you for your wedding?
I can hear you now, surely that’s going to be super expensive? Well how do you know? People are always shocked and amazed when I tell them about my first ever destination wedding. Most brides and grooms think France, Italy, Spain, but they are miles away. My first ever destination wedding was in Montego Bay, Jamaica!!
When I was first contacted by Rebecca and Shaun I also thought they were mad. That is until they told me how much the resort photographer was going to cost them. Not only were they wanting to charge more than I have ever charged for a full days wedding photography, the bride and groom would only have a photographer for 4 hours and receive 50 images on a disc!! On a typical wedding day I deliver an average o 700 images or more.
So the cost you ask??? Well it cost less for the bride and groom to fly me to Jamaica, spend 5 nights in a 5 star hotel spend the full wedding day with them and even do a trash the dress photoshoot the next day. All for less than the resort photographer!!! The final gallery was over 2000 edited wedding images. So less money, more wedding day photographs, and the opportunity for other photoshoots before or after the wedding. Do I have your attention?
So are you still thinking of a destination wedding? Here are a few tips I have learnt over the years that I hope will help you plan your amazing wedding day:
Planning a destination wedding can be an exciting and memorable experience. Whether you’re dreaming of saying “I do” on a tropical beach or in a charming European city, there are several key factors to consider when organising your special day. Let’s dive into the details!
First and foremost, it’s essential to choose the perfect location for your destination wedding. Consider your personal preferences, budget, and the number of guests you plan to invite. Popular destinations for weddings include beach resorts in Mexico, vineyards in Italy, and historic castles in Scotland. Research different venues and their wedding packages to find the one that suits your vision and requirements. Remember to ask about the photographer.
Once you’ve selected your dream location, it’s time to start planning the logistics. Determine the best time of year to have your wedding, taking into account weather conditions, peak tourist seasons, and any local events that may affect availability and prices. It’s also crucial to familiarise yourself with the legal requirements for getting married in your chosen destination, such as obtaining the necessary permits or documents.
Next, create a detailed budget for your destination wedding. Consider all the expenses involved, including travel costs for you and your guests, accommodation, venue fees, catering, decorations, and entertainment. It’s important to allocate funds for unexpected expenses as well. Research local vendors and compare prices to ensure you’re getting the best value for your money. Also remember to speak to wedding photographers in the U.K. It is often cheaper to fly one out for your wedding. Not only could it be cheaper but also you can meet them prior to the wedding, maybe even have an engagement shoot so you can use the photos for wedding stationary.
When it comes to guest management, communication is key. Send out save-the-date cards well in advance to give your guests ample time to plan and make travel arrangements. Provide them with all the necessary information, such as accommodation options, transportation details, and any pre-wedding activities or excursions you have planned. Consider creating a wedding website or using a dedicated app to keep everyone informed and connected. Your wedding photographer may even help with this. Also think of things your photographer could do for you before or after the wedding. Why not ask guests if they want a family photoshoot on the beach or within the landscape? How about a boudoir shoot for you as a wedding gift to your partner. Or even a couples photoshoot?
To make your destination wedding truly special, incorporate elements of the local culture and traditions. Whether it’s serving traditional cuisine, hiring local musicians, or incorporating local customs into your ceremony, these touches will add a unique and memorable flair to your big day. Work closely with your wedding planner or local vendors to ensure these details are executed flawlessly.
Lastly, don’t forget to take care of yourself and your guests during the wedding festivities. Plan some downtime activities, such as spa treatments, sightseeing tours, or group outings, to help everyone relax and enjoy the destination to its fullest. Consider organising welcome bags or gift baskets for your guests, filled with local treats, maps, and personalised notes to show your appreciation for their presence.
In conclusion, planning a destination wedding requires careful consideration and attention to detail. From choosing the perfect location to managing logistics and incorporating local elements, every step contributes to creating a truly unforgettable experience. With proper planning and organisation, your destination wedding will be a cherished memory for both you and your loved ones. Why risk your wedding photographs not being what you dreamed off? Find a wedding photographer to take with you, that way you can see their work, you can meet them and ultimately you can be rest assured that they will capture every aspect of your amazing destination wedding day.
